description by harry grundy
"The 11 pendant necklace orbits Stoodley Pike Monument through a series of framed photographs, taken at rotational increments one spring morning in 2024. The 200 year old monument, built to commemorate Napoleon’s defeat in 1814, is a gnarled gritstone obelisk sat on the edge of the moor above Todmorden and Hebden Bridge, West Yorkshire. It was funded by the textile mills in the local villages that produced the British military uniforms. In 1854 a bolt of lightning exploded it and the day after its renovation the Crimean war began. It is said to sit on a mediaeval burial ground, a cairn where the devil himself would hide from the cold.
The structure of the necklace is based on early Victorian jewellery that sewed together images from crumbling Roman ruins, tableaus from the empire, or family portraits of the rich. It reinterprets the typology to focus on a single subject, to view it through the eyes of many that live in the Calder Valley. The wearer’s neck gives structure to the framework, proudly erecting the 11 little Stoodleys." - Harry Grundy
